CHABTER I الفصل الأول
PHYSICAL AND CLIMAT FEATURES
This chapter includes two types of data :
A–The first is related to geographics & climatic characteristics of Syria agricultral regions, water basins , adminstrative divisions , altitude of main cities and their ordinates , length of borders the most important mountains & height of their peaks , length of rivers & location & surface area of lakes
B–Specific data of 2010 about flow rates of the most important rivers & springs & information on main dams according to the latest measurments
The sources of these data are the following :
– General Organaization for space
–Ministry of irrigation
GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES
I – SITE &EXTENT  :
Syrian Arab Republic lies on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean bounded by Turkey to the north ,Iraq to the east , Palestine & Jordan to the south and Lebanon & the Mediterranean to the West
The Total area of Syrian Arab Republic is 18.517.971 hectares of which six million hectares are cultivated land & the remained is steppe & rocky mountains . The Syrian steppe is suitable for grass growing & is used as pastures during sufficient rainfall
Geographically Syria may be divided into four regions :
1- The coastal region : It lies between the mountains & the sea  1
2- The mountainous regions : runs from the north down to the south of the country & includes all mountains & hills which are parallel to Mediterranean
3-The interior region or the plains region : It comprises the plains of Damascus , Homs , Hama , Aleppo Hassakeh & Daraa it is situated to the east of the mountainous region
4- The steppe region : it is consisting of the desert plains situated in the southeastern part of the country of Jordanian & Iraqi borders
III–AGRICULTURAL SETTLEMENTZONES
Syria may be divided to five stable agricultural zones :
1-First zone : With annual rainfall over 350 mm it is divided into two divisions : 1-
A-  An area with annual rainfall over 600 mm where non-irrigated crops could be successfully planted
B- An area with annual rainfall between 350 – 600 mm and not less than 300 mm during two thirds of the related period i.e. it is possible to get two yield crops seasons each three years of which. The main crops are wheat, pulses and summer crops
2-Second zone :With annual rainfall rate between 250 – 350 mm and less than 250 mm during two thirds of related years . It is possible to get two barley seasons  each three year , Besides planting  barley wheat, pulses and summer crops could be planted 2 - منطقة الاستقرار الثانية : يتراوح معدل أمطارها بين 250- 350 مم سنوياً ولايقل عن 250 مم في ثلثي السنوات المرصودة .
3-Third zone : its annual rainfall rate reach 250 mm and not less than this during the half of the relative years i.e. it  is possiple to get one or two yield  seasons each three years the main crop is  barely, pulses could be planted 3- منطقة الاستقرار الثالثة : يصل معدل أمطارها إلى 250 مم سنوياً ولايقل عن هذا الرقم لنصف السنوات المرصودة أي يمكن ضمان  1- 2  موسم لكل ثلاث سنوات ومحصولها الرئيسي الشعير وقد تزرع البقوليات .
4-Fourth ( Marginal ) zone : With annual rainfall rate between 200 – 250 mm and not less than 200 mm during the half of the related years Barley is planted in this zone and is good as permanent grazing land 4- منطقة الاستقرار الرابعة (الهامشية) : يتراوح معدل أمطارها بين 200-250 مم ولايقل عن 200 مم في نصف السنوات المرصودة ولاتصلح إلا للشعير أو المراعي الدائمة .
5-Fifth zone ( Steppe ) it covers what remains of the country land not suitable for non irrigated planting 5- منطقة الاستقرار الخامسة (البادية) : وهي كل ما تبقى من أراضي القطر وهذه لا تصلح للزراعة البعلية .
 IV – HYDROLOGICAL BASINS:
Water resourses in Syria are distributed among the following :
1- The steppe basin 1-
2- The coast  basin 2-
3- Orontes basin 3-
4- Aleppo & uphrates Basin 4-
5- Alyarmok basin 5-
6- Barada&Alaawaj basin 6-
7- Djla &Alkhabor basin 7-
Local rainfall and snowfall constitute themain sources of underground water for these basins exept for the Steppe and Orontes basins which are fed by external sources
V – ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS :
Syria is administratively devided into 14 Governorates (Mohafaza)  each Governorate generally divided into Manatikas , each Mantika is further divided into smaller administrative units called Nahia each Nahia covers a number of villages ,the village is the smallest administrative unit
Governorate is headed by a Governor (Mohafez) A Mantika is headed by “ Mudir el-Mantika” ,
Al-Nahia is headed by “ Mudir Al-Nahia “ , and a village is represented by district chief ( village headman , who is responsible for the village and the surrounding farms ) يعين المحافظون بمرسوم ويعين مديرو المناطق والنواحي من قبل وزارة الداخلية
A Governor is appointed by a decree while mudir Al Mantika and Mudir Al-Nahia are appointed by the Ministry of interior
District chiefs administratively attached to the Governor or to Mudir el Mantika or el- Nahia and is usually appointed by the Minister of local Administration or through his authorization
Usually District chief  is responsible to Mudir el- Nahia who is responsible to the Governor except in the cases where villages are directly attached to Mudir el-Mantika or the Governor
Governorates Centers are the chief cities after which the Governorates are named . Al-Mantika Centers are the (Mantika Center town ) after which the Mantika are named
There are in all (69) Mantika that include Governorates Centers Mantikas which   are (14) Mantika and (295) Nahia distributed as in table 1/1 at the middel
The following special cases should be noted :
– Damascus city is considered as a separate Governorate called governorate of Damascus -
Some villages are directly attached to Governorate center they have no attachment  to a Nahia or Mantika Center they are called Governorate center villages - هناك بعض القرى التي ترتبط مباشرةً بمركز المحافظة دون أن ترتبط بمركز الناحية أو بمركز المنطقة وتسمى في هذه الحالة قرى مركز المحافظة
– Some villages are directly attached to Mantika Center without being attached to a Nahia Center . They are called Mantika Center’s villages - هناك بعض القرى التي ترتبط مباشرة بمركز المنطقة دون أن ترتبط بمركز الناحية وتسمى في هذه الحالة قرى مركز المنطقة
some Nahias are  related to Governorate  center without attachment to Mantika Center, In this case they are called Nahias of Governorate center
